Research has always been routed towards finding solutions and pathways to all the unknowns in the science, arts, mathematics or technological fields. Research compromises a set of information and considers the methodologies used to get valuable insights into literature gaps. It is information gathered through formulating the thesis and results based on the hypotheses. You always need to perform a research study in the academic and professional fields. A research study has different types. No matter what type of research you will perform, the main problem is choosing a research design or methods. This article is based on the research designs, which will help you choose the research design that is best for your research.
What is a Research Design?
Research is a collection of facts and information or a compilation of information of data. The use of methods and terminologies that the researcher in their research uses is what research design is about. This design allows the researcher to use all the suitable methods for his research study.
Major Types of Research Design:
In research, you can find two designs named qualitative and quantitative. But there are also sub-types of research designs depending upon the type of research study. Let’s explore all these types in detail
Quantitative Research Design:
Quantitative research designs are used in both natural and social sciences. If a researcher is investigating relationships between numerical variables in a study this design can be used. In this research design the researcher usually examines the cause-and-effect relationship between multiple variables using graphics, figures, charts and tables to analyse numerical data. You can also get dissertation help online to complete this research type if you are using in your dissertation.
Qualitative Research Design:
This kind of design is fairly different from quantitative research design. It is theoretical and finds responses to the questions “what’s and how’s.” for example, it majorly emphasizes why a philosophy occurs? And whatever are the consequences, and how will the recipient react to them? It allows a researcher to conclude accurate results. If your research is a case study, then it would be best if you did your research according to the qualitative research design.
Sub-Types of Research Designs:
As you know, the broadly classified types of research design, let’s briefly talk about the subtypes of research design divided as follows:
1. Descriptive Research Design:
A researcher describes his research study in-depth in this research design. This research design is completely hypothetical. The researcher assembles information, performs analyses, their solutions, and then displays the results understandably.
This type of research is also called observational research, as none of the variables is included in this. A researcher can use the exploratory method first to explore the data required for this research if the problem is not clear enough.
2. Experimental Research Design:
This design is also called an experimentation and usually performs different experiments. Mostly all kinds of quantitative research studies are experimental. You can use this design to see the cause-effect relationship between two or more variables. One variable is a dependent variable while the other is independent, and you can manipulate it and see the difference. You can use this research type if your study is based on social science to observe human behaviour. Experimental research design is a more accurate and practical kind of research approach which help in the formation of the relationship between variables.
3. Correlational Research Design:
If your research study is to figure out how one object impacts the other, then this research design is for you. The correlation research design refers to the relationship between two entities. This research design is carried out between naturing occurring variables. The variables included in this research are not in the researcher’s control. The researcher only tries to examine whether or not the relationship between two variables exists.
We can not make a conclusion just based on correlation studies, as this research only indicates whether there is a relationship between two groups or not. As two variables are connected, it doesn’t mean they are interwoven, or one variable establishes a relationship with another.
The correlational coefficient is a numeric value and determines the strength of the relationship. If it gives a -1 value, that means an opposite relation, i.e., if the first variable rises, another will be decreased. If it obtained a +1 value, it indicates a positive relationship. That means another variable will also be increased with increasing one variable.
4. Diagnostic Research Design:
In this research design, the researcher deeply studies the main factors causing the problem and evaluates that specific cause. This research design included three steps:
- The foundation of the issue: in this step, the researcher tries to solve the questions like; when and in what situation did this issue arise?
- The diagnosis of the issue: in this step, the researcher tries to figure out the main cause and influence.
- The solution to the issue: in this step, the researcher, finds the best way to cure the problem.
5. Explanatory Research Design:
Use this research design if your study is unique and has not been studied before. In this research design, a researcher explores phenomena that have not been explored before. The main purpose of this design is to explore other theories. This method of research focuses on explaining unfamiliar patterns. The methods for this research design are:
- Literature review
- Case studies
- In-depth study
- Focus groups
Research design is a beneficial practice of doing research and helps us get a deeper knowledge of a topic. It can improve our critical analysis skills by resolving any complex problem. We can say that research is a fuel to drive the solutions to the world’s problems. Choosing the best research design for your research is very important in ensuring you get the highest possible grade in your dissertation as it impacts your whole research. You have been given a clear idea about various types of research designs through this article. Choose the one that fits your research framework and study type, and you will surely succeed in your academic career.
